A Comprehensive Guide to Bringing Your Pets to Maui, Hawaii
Are you planning to move or planning a spectacular vacation to Maui? Most know that their pets
are a large part of their family. The thought of leaving your fur babies behind is not an option.
This guide will take you through the detailed process on how you can make this happen,
including links to resources to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your
pets. My family has firsthand experience with this process, and I want to help share this with
you.
Understanding Hawaii’s Animal Quarantine Laws
To ensure you have a smooth and stress-free experience, you must understand the requirements
for pet travel to Maui. Careful planning and adhering to Hawaii’s strict animal importation laws
are crucial. Hawaii is a rabies-free state and takes this status very seriously. Here’s what you
need to know:
Rabies Vaccinations
Your fur baby must have at least two rabies vaccinations. The most recent vaccination must be
given at least 30 days before arrival and no more than 12 months before for a 1-year vaccine or
36 months before for a 3-year vaccine. You will also need to provide two original copies of your
pet's vaccination certificates when they travel.
Getting the OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test
This test is very specific to measure the rabies antibody levels in your pet. This blood test must
be conducted at least 120 days before arrival and show sufficient antibody levels. Only two labs
in the United States are approved to run this blood test: Kansas State University and Auburn
University. A veterinarian draws blood from a pet for the OIE-FAVN Rabies Test, which is then
sent to Kansas State University or Auburn University for analysis. These Laboratories are the
only OIE-approved labs in North America that performs this test for the general public. The
original report is usually sent directly to Hawaii.
Microchip Identification
Pets must be microchipped for identification. Ensure the microchip is functioning and matches
the documents. Refer to your veterinary office for more information.
Your Pet’s Health Certificate
A licensed veterinarian must issue a health certificate within 14 days of your pet’s arrival,
confirming your pet is free of pests and diseases. Always refer to your veterinarian’s protocols.
Preparing Your Pet for Travel
Verify Airline Requirements
Refer to airlines for specific guidelines. Once you have all your necessary certificates and
documents in order, it’s time to begin your travel plans. Planning logistics is a key component to
your pet’s safe travel. There are organizations that can assist with this process, such as the Maui
Humane Society and Island Pet Movers. Check with your airline, as some have restrictions on
pet travel during certain times of the year due to weather conditions.
Airline Approved Pet Carriers
Pet-specific carriers need to be purchased; again, please refer to airline specifications. Maui
Humane Society and Island Pet Movers can assist you with getting appropriate pet carriers and
specifications. It will be required to purchase a comfortable, airline-approved pet carrier. Follow
specific instructions on measuring your pet for an appropriately sized carrier, ensuring they come
with attachment bowls for food and water.
Book Your Flights
If possible, book a direct flight to minimize the stress and risk to your pet. Refer to airlines’
specific regulations regarding pet layovers.
Acclimate Your Pet to the Carrier
Before traveling, have your pet get used to spending time in the carrier to become familiar with
the surroundings.
Arriving in Maui: Be Prepared with Your Pet
Once you arrive, your pet will be inspected by the Animal Quarantine Station staff. Usually, a
veterinarian will meet you in a designated safe area.
Arriving in Maui: Be Prepared with Your Pet
You will need to present all the required documents. The veterinarian will conduct a medical
assessment to approve your pet for direct release.
Pet-Friendly Accommodation

case any health concerns arise. If you are making Maui your permanent home, apply for a pet
