Thinking About Moving to Maui? Read This First
Every week, I talk to people dreaming about relocating to Maui. Some people are looking to downsize and live in a Kihei or Wailulu residential condo, and others are looking for a vacation rental in Napili, Kaanapali, or Wailea. Some are remote workers, some are retirees, and some are just ready for a new chapter. But the truth is: moving to Maui is different than vacationing here. So before you book that one-way flight, here’s what you should know.
-
Cost of living is real. Groceries, utilities, and gas cost more than the mainland. And while wages can be lower, property prices are high. Budget carefully—island life is worth it, but it’s not cheap.
-
It’s about lifestyle, not luxury. The most successful new residents on Maui are the ones who come for lifestyle, and are looking to respect and share Aloha—connection, nature, simplicity—not just amenities. Prioritize community over convenience.
-
You’ll need to downsize or adapt. Island homes are often smaller, older, or laid out differently than mainland properties. Storage is limited. Embrace the change.
-
Shipping + setup can be tough. Bringing a car? Shipping furniture? Be prepared for logistics. Many people start fresh or buy local once they arrive.
-
Respect matters. Learn the history. Get involved. Approach this move with humility and aloha. The culture here is rich, and your experience will be shaped by how you engage with it.
Moving to Maui can absolutely be a dream. But it works best when you’re grounded, informed, and open to the island teaching you.
